Artist Statement:
My work continues the two-thousand-year-old engagement between art and religion not through the Judeo-Christian tradition of depicting Biblical narratives, but by utilizing contemporary visual strategies such as the spiritualization of found materials, the recontextualization of objects from material and popular culture, and craft to express various theological ideas, the practice of contemplative prayer, and relationship between religious ideas and various aspects of culture. I am a trained artist but have always gravitated toward the visual sensibilities of outsider and visionary artist—especially works that are expressions of faith practiced outside of, or as an extension of, sanctioned practices by organized religion. This vernacular manner of working, utilizing common materials and a DIY approach to art making, reflects both idiosyncratic contemporary artmaking practices and how many people actually live their faith.
