Join us for some of the best of Caribbean music such as calypso, soca, reggae as well as folk, popular, and jazz styles to the most challenging new music for pans by composers such as Ray Holman, Andy Narell, Victor Provost, Pelham Goddard, Machel Montano, and many others. Expect food, art, and fun for all!
The Iowa Steel Band, under the direction of Dr. Dan Moore, is the most active ensemble from The UI School of Music. The band performs extensively throughout Iowa and the Midwest under the auspices of the UI Arts Share program. The Iowa Steel Band was formed in 1996 and typically features 15-20 performing members. Since then, they have performed in 40 of Iowa’s 99 counties and counting. In 2013, the band won international recognition by winning the World Percussion Ensemble Competition which is sponsored by the Percussive Arts Society, the largest and most prestigious percussion organization worldwide. The band has four critically acclaimed recordings to their credit: everywhere Calypso, Noise Brigade, Queen of the Bands, and their latest album, Jungle Music with Andy Narell, which can be heard on Spotify, YouTube, and most other streaming platforms.
