November 1st, 2023. CRESTON, IA - Creston Community High School Art is showcasing student work at the Creston Arts Depot Gallery for the month of November in a show titled Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, to honor their loved ones who have passed.
“The goal was for students to study and learn the traditional way of making [traditional Mexican folk art] and take inspiration from that to make their own work of art,” said CCHS Art Teacher Bailey Fry-Schnormeier.
This show will display a variety of works from three, two-dimensional design (2-D) classes and a Multicultural Art class. Students from the 2-D class have created papel picados, a traditional Mexican folk art craft of intricate and elaborate design
s cut into colorful sheets of tissue paper. Multicultural students made their own Arboles de la Vida, or Trees of Life, which are ceramic trees with a storytelling element. Both are made in memory and honor of, and inspired by, a close friend or family member who has passed.
The exhibit will include other traditional elements including the Ofrenda, or Altar, and marigolds to lead the spirits to the altar. There will also be Pan del Muertos, or Bread of the Dead to put on the altars created by Martha Boehlke’s culinary class. The Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) have bake sugar cookies to resemble sugar skulls for those attending the opening reception.
Opening Reception Friday
An opening reception will take place 6 to 8 p.m. this Friday, Nov. 3, at the Creston Arts Depot Gallery, located within Creston’s Restored Depot at 116 W. Adams St. There will be light refreshments.
